Storm Smith

Art Director | BBDO Worldwide

Storm is an Art Director at BBDO Worldwide, one of the top advertising agencies in New York City. Over the years, she has had robust career experiences in visual storytelling, marketing, higher education, and advertising.

Storm’s significant work over the years has brought to the attention of JD Michaels, the award-winning Executive Vice President, Director of Diversity of BBDO Worldwide, who recruited Storm as an Art Director & Creative Resident in Creative Residency. This makes Storm the first (historically) Deaf woman to be part of the Creative Residency and ever to work for BBDO. BBDO Worldwide is a well-known company with an impeccable reputation for their award-winning work with over 50 companies and clients, including Pepsi, Foot Locker, AT&T, Mountain Dew, Pedigree, and many more, receiving countless honors, recognition, and awards, including Network of the Year from Cannes Festival and the Webby Awards.

Storm has been featured in PopSugar, Billboard, Campaign, TV Guide, and her BBDO’s influential campaign ad for International Women’s Day “It’s Time to Redefine,” which was also featured in AdAge, AdWeek, Creativity, PR News Wire, The Drum and more. The campaign has reached Google’s attention, where, on the following day post-launch, Google’s definition of “woman” changed and no longer carries the definition “a female paid to clean someone’s house and carry out general domestic duties.” It has moved the needle that generated approximately 12 million impressions worldwide. Later, Storm was invited by Apple Inc. to join and collaborate, direct, and produce the video campaign, Everyone Can Code. The results are accessible videos, in sign language, with closed captions and text transcripts for everyone. These videos sought to communicate to youth who are Deaf, Hard of hearing, or have a range of hearing loss that just as they learned to sign, they can learn to code! This approach will help to elevate the possibilities for them, allowing them to know they can have a career in the high demand tech-related industries as much as the next person.

Storm has always been an ambassador seeking out and strengthening relationships with people in the industry across the nation for collaborations, partnerships, resources, and network purposes consistent with the theme of pushing for change on a different level. Her work has often helped to shine a positive light on critical societal issues, i.e., people with disabilities, gender equality, people of color, and LGBTQIA. Her successful collaborative projects feature Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin on her new apparel clothing line “Courage + Dreams = Success”, Tony nominee actress Lauren Ridloff on Communications Service for the Deaf (CSD)’s mission to enhance opportunity for people with disability in employment, the historically 13th woman on the Harlem Globetrotter basketball team & influencer Crissa Ace Jackson, and an incredible young rising star, Samaya Clark-Gabriel for their branding advocacy video for young girls in youth community.

Storm was invited to be part of Ford Foundation media convening event with the “Thought Leaders in the Entertainment and Media Industry,” where we shared and developed strategies on how to push for change on the importance of representations of diversity and disability in the media. Undoubtedly, it is clear that she delivers her passions of balancing the business work and ambassador work that will not only lead the company to excel but will lead to a competitive edge. She is passionate to have connections with different amazing people who hold high-ranking positions and leaders in their company, non-profit organization, and education to identify and offer collaboration opportunities that foster positive change and make it a more inclusive society.

Storm has delivered keynotes such as at NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters) in Las Vegas, FCPX Creative Summit in Cupertino, California, Harvard University, Boston University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Gallaudet University, Rochester Institution of Technology (RIT), and more.

Storm’s countless contributions and appearances have earned her numerous awards, including a prestigious award from the City of Los Angeles in 2014, presented by the mayor and city council member, for her dedication and contribution to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Storm graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Gallaudet University and a Master of Arts degree in Media Entrepreneurship from American University. Both schools are based in Washington, D.C.
