I never intended to work in technology. Graduating with a bachelor’s in medieval and early modern English literature didn’t exactly lend itself to dreams of heading up design departments at huge enterprise tech companies. I found my way into it when I studied information science in grad school, where I explored the means in which we stored and retrieved information in the digital space to make it as accessible as possible to all kinds of people. The two problems that I am interested in solving are how we can design at scale and how we can diversify the field – not just in terms of race and gender, but also socio-economic background. I see these two problems as critically linked, because technology is not about software – technology is about people.
