Love Hugs and Inspiration Backstory:
In early 2007, Lisa Mae Brunson was talking with members of her family and another friend who were having a difficult time with depression and suicidal ideation. Through conversations, Lisa Mae learned that a common denominator for these individuals was their loneliness and confession that they had not been hugged or touched by a human in quite some time. “I just want to be hugged.”
Lisa Mae realized that she had also not felt a hug in months. She needed to be hugged too. So she drove through two states to give one of them a hug, and then decided to launch her Love, Hugs and Inspiration Campaign upon her return! Lisa Mae has written poetry since she was 10 years old and decided to write and compile inspirational poetry specifically for her campaign. She self-published 7000 copies and passed them out to the random humans she hugged on the streets. Her first campaign was conducted at the Santa Monica Promenade for two full weekends in a row, which she blogged about originally on MySpace. The impact was so profound, that Lisa Mae has continued her Love, Hugs, and Inspiration campaign every year since, mainly during the holidays as her schedule grew heavier. She vowed she would continue the tradition and has taken to handwriting holiday cards and messages on heart cutouts to pass on.
She has hugged people at the Santa Monica Promenade, The Grove, Hollywood Blvd.. in Los Angeles, and 2nd St. in Long Beach, CA, and also at Arizona State University, Cal State Long Beach, and randomly on streets and at the Wonder Women Tech events around the world.
She has learned a lot about humans since she launched her hugs campaign. Once she passed out her final copy of her poetry booklet, marking the first 7000 hugs, she wrote a story about her journey here.
