Birgit Penzenstadler is an assistant professor for software engineering at the California State University Long Beach. She leads the research group on Software Engineering for Sustainability. Her research focuses on artifact-based requirements engineering and requirements engineering for sustainability as major system objective. She is the organizer of the workshop series “Requirements Engineering for Sustainable Systems”. Furthermore, Birgit is a founding member of the “Karlskrona Manifesto on Sustainability Design” working group (see www.sustainabilitydesign.org). Up to now, she has authored and co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications.

Outside of her profession, Birgit is passionate about nature (especially mountains) and people. She am training to be a yoga teacher and she is organizing a volunteer trip to Nepal with a small non-profit called Conscious Impact. In her free time, she loves to dance salsa, rock climb, and run barefoot.
