Dr. Magliato is one of the few female cardiothoracic surgeons in the world. She founded and directed a Multidisciplinary Women’s Health Center to address the cardiac needs of female patients at Providence Saint John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica, CA, where she is currently on staff. Prior to joining Saint John’s Medical Center, Dr. Magliato was a heart/lung transplant surgeon and Director of the Mechanical Assist Device Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Magliato received a BS degree in biochemistry with Cum Laude honors at Union College in New York and earned her MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland where she graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. Dr. Magliato completed 10 years of surgical training at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2006, she earned an Executive MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Dr. Magliato is the Immediate Past President of the Greater Los Angeles Board of the American Heart Association. She is the first woman to ever hold this position. She was recently promoted to serve on their Western States Affiliate board. She is also on the Board of Trustees for Union College, The John Ritter Foundation and the Dean’s Visiting Committee at Case Western Reserve University School Of Medicine.

Dr. Magliato is currently developing a cardiovascular diagnostic medical device for which she holds a patent. She serves as Founder, CEO and CMO of her technology company, Cordex Systems Inc. and is currently conducting clinical trials at John’s Hopkins Medical Center.

Dr. Magliato is the recipient of many national and regional awards including the Women’s Leadership Exchange 2003 Compass Award and, in 2006, was initiated into the American College of Surgeons. In 2008, Dr. Magliato was honored at the American Red Cross gala, along with the cast of Grey’s Anatomy, and received their “Spirit of Humanitarianism” award. In 2011, she and Kate White, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, were awarded the Exceptional Women award in Boston. In October, 2013, Dr. Magliato received The Distinguished Alumni Award from Case Western Reserve University. This, their highest award, was also jointly presented to the 16th Surgeon General of the United States. She was also recently named as one of the 100 most inspirational alumni by the UCLA Anderson School of Management in honor of their 75th year celebration. In 2016, Dr. Magliato received the Women’s Day Magazine/AHA Red Dress Award along with Vivek Murthy, the Surgeon General of the United States. Past honorees include President Bill Clinton, Former First Lady Laura Bush and Barbra Walters.

She has been highlighted by the media as an expert in heart disease and has been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX news as well as WebMD, Lifetime and National Geographic Explorer. Dr. Magliato has been quoted in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Houston Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune and USA Today. She has appeared on a Barbara Walters 20/20 special about heart disease, the Martha Stewart show, CBS’s The Doctors, The Dr. Oz Show, NBC’s Home and Family as well as a special by Oprah Winfrey for OWN and a PSA with Queen Latifah.

Dr. Magliato’s memoir HEART MATTERS was published by Random House and received a starred review by Publisher’s Weekly and a 4 out of 4 star review in People Magazine. Played by Melissa George, her life has inspired a scripted TV medical drama entitled Heartbeat on NBC. Dr. Magliato was also a Co-Executive Producer on TNT’s PROOF and consulted on ABC’s GREY’S ANATOMY.

Dr. Magliato lives in Pacific Palisades, California, with her husband, also a surgeon, and Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and their two sons, ages ten and twelve.
