DID YOU KNOW?

Fun Fact about The City of Long Beach

Long Beach is the first city in Los Angeles County to provide emergency alert messages to residents who are deaf, blind or hard of hearing in accessible formats, including American Sign Language (ASL) with English voice-over text.
These improvements increase the reach of AlertLongBeach, an emergency alert notification system launched late last year to keep those who live or work in Long Beach informed of important information before, during and after a major emergency or disaster.

CAREER FAIR ROUND TABLE WORKSHOPS

11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
-- Kaylin Lee: A Glance View of Data Science
What! Again? According to Glassdoor.com, data science is still ranked top on the 50 Best Jobs in
America, determined by number of job openings, salary, and job satisfaction rating. Harvard Business
Review refers data science as the ‘Sexiest Job of the 21th Century”. Being data-driven and data-informed
are quickly becoming core values in modern business strategy across all industry. Data science
professionals are a core group of people who influence business decision-making through continuously
accessing, transforming, analyzing, and systematically finding patterns in the data. Working as a Data
Scientist (DS) requires a combination of business domain knowledge, quantitative solidity, and data
engineering; and, this is just the beginning! In this round table session, I will discuss FAQs on the DS
role. Topics include what makes a DS candidate, my stories on how I landed in this field, and advice on
how to nail that entry position.
The target audience for our presentation is primarily students and early career professionals, although
anyone interested in the DS field is welcome and would benefit. Participants are encouraged to share their
background for personalized career advice during discussion.
-- Wenting Zhao: Data Visualization with JavaScript
No matter we like or not, we live in the information age. Every day we are fully immersed in newsfeed,
fitness, and stock price data. One estimate suggests that 99.5% of the data our system collects goes to
waste. As software developers, what are the tools already available for us to utilize and visualize these
undiscovered data? In this workshop, I will talk about the principles about data visualization and how to
build your own strategic dashboard with JavaScript to make your data informative and intriguing. A big
perk is that you can actually make your personal website more interactive and data-driven!
The target audience for this talk is developers that are dealing with high volumes of data and want to
learn how to present data efficiently.
